Artist's Description
Spalted Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) Wood Grain This fungus-caused pattern is used to make highly desired wood pieces. Fungi pigments caused these interlaced black lines on this wood sample. Spalting refers to wood discoloration by fungi. Here, the pattern looks like black veins. Certain kinds of fungi cause these beautiful but atypical patterns on maple wood. If not harvested, the wood will eventually weaken. This image can also be appreciated as an abstract pattern created by nature.
