Description
This is a portrait headstone photographed in Boston. It shows the top of a weathered and worn New England grave marker, probably dating from the 18th century.
This fine example is located in Copp's Hill Burying Ground in Boston, Massachusetts, near the Freedom Trail. Tourists may want to look for the different types of grave iconography. This example contrasts with the skull carvings found on other graves.
Isolated on a black background, the marker looks a little like a photographic negative. The carver included a lifelike portrait (not necessarily a likeness of the deceased). Angel wings possibly symbolized the soul's flight up to heaven.
