Description
Sculpture of Hartford dentist Horace Wells, famous for his pioneering work in anesthesiology.
Horace Wells, 1815-1848, a pioneering dentist, is among those credited with the discovery on inhalation anesthesia. He observed the effects of nitrous oxide and then used it for dental surgery. He ushered in the era of pain-free surgery and dentistry. His discovery was deemed so important that a French medical society gave him an honorary medical degree. Unfortunately, his life ended tragically by suicide.
The statue is in Hartford, Connecticut, in Bushnell Park. It was erected in 1874.
